Our Revised Strategic Plan!

Our strategic plan states in a formal manner what we are trying to accomplish and records the progress we have made towards those goals.  Over the past year we have done some collective reflection on the work of the Society including an on-line survey of past and current members.  We had an excellent response to the survey.  Thanks to all of you who participated.  We have drafted a new strategic plan for 2020/2021 which you may view by clicking here.   Please let us know what you think!

And, for your viewing pleasure . . .

We are pleased to introduce to you our video promoting the Cowichan Shoreline Stewardship Project.  This ongoing, multi-year project focuses on the value and importance of a healthy riparian zone.  Click here to see the video!

Weir Ready!  Are You?

Then . . .

Since the 1950s, the Cowichan Lake Weir has stored water to supply a local mill and to keep the Cowichan River Flowing in the summer, but it can't keep up with the longer drier summers as our climate changes.  The river fell below acceptable flows in 5 of the last 6 summers and this trend is worsening.

Now . . .

A campaign has begun to increase the height of the weir to allow for more water storage in the Lake, making more water available during dry summers to keep the River flowing.  The Cowichan Lake & River Stewards fully support this initiative.  To learn more about the Weir Ready campaign, please click here.

Are you curious to know how new weir levels will impact your property?  We are now offering a free service to show you on your property where old and new weir heights will affect your water line and in addition it will show you where the high water mark is.  You can view a short video of how it works by clicking here. If you are interested please contact us to arrange a visit.

The current situation . . .

The CLRSS have prepared and released a new report.  Included is a summary of the issues surrounding diminished summertime water flows in the river along with our recommended solution to this problem and tips on how you can participate in advocating for it.

You will also find summaries of our current programs and upcoming activities that you may be interested in participating in.
