Gerald Thom Environmental Studies (GTES) Bursary

The bursary will be one award of $2000 unless there is more than one qualifying candidate. In that case two awards may be given at the discretion of the CLRSS Bursary Committee.

Eligibility

Candidates must:

  • be Lake Cowichan School (LCS) students in their graduating year,

  • plan to enroll in post-secondary studies.

Criteria

Priority will be given to applicants who:

  • plan to enrol in courses or programs related to the environment,

  • have demonstrated commitment and service to improving or restoring the local environment.

Students may demonstrate their “commitment and service” by, for example:

  • involvement in projects/activities at school,

  • volunteering with CLRSS or other stewardship groups,

  • taking leadership roles.

Some possibilities for volunteering with CLRSS are:

  • participating in a CLRSS event,

  • working in the Gerald Thom Memorial Native Plant Garden,

  • growing/planting/educating about native plants,

  • removing/educating about invasive plants,

  • water sampling,

  • serving on the CLRSS board.

This GTES Bursary Application will be reviewed by the LCS Bursary Committee and a recipient will be selected by the CLRSS Bursary Committee from their recommendations.

Applicants will be asked to respond to as many of the following questions as possible:
  1. Who was Gerald Thom and how did he contribute to the health and protection of the Cowichan Watershed?

  2. What is the Cowichan Lake and River Stewardship Society (CLRSS) and how does it serve the community and surrounding area?

  3. List your LCS activities that support the bursary criteria.

  4. List any awards (recognition) you have received that would be relevant to the bursary criteria.

  5. What are your immediate future education plans (courses, programs, university/college)?​

Gerald Thom Environmental Stewardship Award

The award of $500 will be presented to a student who is not planning on post-secondary education. In recognition of involvement in environmental stewardship during their time at LCS. The student will be chosen by LCS staff.

Eligibility

Any student in grades 9, 10, 11, or 12.

Criteria

Students must have:

  • been actively involved in school and/or community projects that improve or restore the environment,

  • demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm in those activities.

Gerald Thom Memorial Native Plant Garden

We have a garden for the community that demonstrates the beauty and hardiness of native plants.

A dream of stewardship activist and the society’s first president, Gerald Thom, it was built by the Cowichan community in Saywell Park. Come visit.
